A deep retrofit and extension of a house in Richmond, London, but made with timber from a Welsh forest. It is not often that we are able to select the materials we use form the source, but that was the case in this project, where we were able to co-ordinate the construction of our project with a woodland management strategy of a forest in Wales. The harvested timber features throughout the project, both as planed timber and sawn timber with the bark left exposed.

Knowing the provenance of materials is relevant in terms of carbon emissions because the embodied carbon in a materials journey from 'cradle' to 'gate' can be significant. Working with foresters as part of a woodland management strategy, we were able to harvest and mill the timber we required for the project and use it to maximum visual effect within the project.
