Giles gave four workshops to in the School of the Built Environment, Nottingham to the 3rd year students focusing on the role of environmental design in studio work. Over the course of four weeks, 160 students were introduced to various methodologies for developing architectural solutions with respect to specific climates in terms of operational performance.

Works commenced at the beginning of the month on the Battleship Building in Paddington. A-Zero have worked closely with BDSP Partnership to formulate a brief and design for the space which reflects the ethos of the company, and the unique style of the building itself. A-Zero had already completed the fit-out of BDSP’s old premises in Paddington in 2007, and this new premises offers a significant improvement in facilities.

In response to this RIBA competition for new sustainable housing in Salford, A-Zero developed the theme of solar access in high density urban settings, a long standing research interest of the practice. Developing the requirement of the brief to develop the design should consider occupants of all ages and life-styles, the proposal examined how the built morphology could ensure sunlight availability to all apartments according to specific occupancy patterns. This strategy provides significant benefits in terms of amenity and energy, with passive solar design playing an important role in in the environmental performance of individual apartments.
