Competition, 2013

 

This competition proposal for new housing in the Hebrides, Scotland makes use of existing abandoned or self-build structures in the landscape. These structures are positioned relative to the strong prevailing windows, and make use of material that is ubiquitous in the landscape. A prefabricated roofing element, lined with internal serviced wall panels is then fixed to the base walls as a series of inert-connected modules. The aim of the proposal is to maximise the amount of ‘sweat equity’ that a home owner can invest in their own home, (i.e. putting value on self-build), whilst still meeting passive house standards in terms of heat loss.
